The causes of misalignments can be acute or chronic; misalignments may have resulted from a traumatic incident or they may have occured over time, often due to compensation. Below are some common examples;
Acute causes
Slipping or falling when working or playing (e.g. gun dog on difficult terrain, chasing balls, rough playing with other dogs)
Falling from apparatus e.g. agility dogs
Landing awkwardly when jumping
Colliding with object/dog/person
Chronic causes
Conformational faults
Pulling on the lead
Repetitive work
Compensation for an injury/condition
How can I recognise signs of back pain?
Reluctance to exercise
Signs of pain/discomfort when being stroked/groomed
Yelping/crying out when getting up/down
Stiffness after resting
Stiffness and pain after exercise
Behavioural changes - e.g. lethargy, agressiveness
Stopping jumping, including on and off furniture/in
and out of cars
Difficulty going up and down stairs
Breaking sit/down stays
Always sitting with the hindquarters to the same side
Repetitively presenting back / hindquarters to be rubbed
Lameness, where alternative causes have been eliminated by a vet
